A rose by any other name?

Post by SandySandilands » Fri Aug 24, 2012 11:17 pm

My 5 x great grandfather had a sister named Julian (Julianne) who appears to have been the 1st (Julianne) in the family or perhaps not depending if anyone here knows of a derivative of the name in Scotland?

I have thought of Anne or Julie but they seem to be far too obvious for Scotland with Peter/Philip/Patrick and Mary/Agnes/Jane and George/Hugh/John.

Hello Sandy,

There appears to have been a Saint Julian and a Roman Emperor so it’s an old name. But was there a Scottish Gaelic translation? I don’t know anything about Gaelic but it seems there’s no ‘J’ and whatever it was would start with an ‘I’. Possibly Iuile, but that may be Julie.

It seems that for females Gillian was derived from Julian.

It may be worthwhile having a play with the free search on the SP home page. A search for Julian gives me 147 in the 1841 census declining to only 74 by 1911. Juliann* gives me 4 in 1841 rising to 26 in 1911. There are even fewer Gillian’s and even some Iu*’s.

Probably no help at all,
Alan

Thanks Alan.

Tried the searches with wildcards and also concentrated on marriages where the bride was a Julian and compared their maiden name with other branches in our tree thinking the name may have be passed down from a grandmother but I've had no luck so far.

Julian is always referred to by her full name so I definitely think it was the name she was known by. I was just hoping to find a likely candidate for her mother or grandmother thinking that the name would have been passed down. There are neighbours and friends of the family at the time with the name Juliane so I am now leaning more towards thinking that Julian may have been named after a friend rather than a relative.
