Howgillcleuch
has anyone heard of Howgillcleuch, not sure if maybe it is a farm (or was) I can't see it on any modern map, its the birth place of my great grandmother in the parish of canonbie, Dumfries. Is there somewhere I can go to see old maps? other than having to go to canonbie itself?

There's a list of useful map sites [old & new] here:

However just putting Howgillscleugh into Google gives a postcode of DG14 0RZ.
Putting that into Bing maps and choosing the OS map option, then you'll find there is a building of that name still in existance.
About 3 miles directly north of Canonbie village at the edge of a forestry area and near a Roman Fort, about 2 miles southeast of Langholm.
Comparing that location with the older maps on NLS, would lead me to think it was previously known as Upper Tarasfoot.
On the even older Roys map 1750's there's a Cleuch Braehead and Torricefoot mentioned in the same area.
And just for good measure this is a photo of the area http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1133897

Re: Howgillcleuch
I had a wee google and found this this so it doesn't appear to be named on the map but at least it shows where it is.
A look at an old map doesn't show a place name either. When did she live there?
Regards,
Annette
I see Wilma has found it named but I'll leave this anyway - welcome to TS BTW.

You'll find there is loads of information here on Talking Scot , the Talking Scot Library section has dozens of topics with general information & links.
Use the search function too, it's amazing the things, people and places we've discussed over the years on here - a vast pool of knowledge
Out of interest when did your GGrandmother live at Howgillcleugh? using census records could track when it's name changed.
