Scottish Criminal Records

Post by sheilajim » Mon Mar 11, 2013 10:42 pm

Hi All,

I hear that Find My Past is making available Criminal Records for England and Wale. Does anybody know if there will be Criminal Records for Scotland made available any time soon? I would like to find out if any of my old Rellies were ever on the wrong side of the law. Another question; does anybody know when the Old Kirk records will become availabe on ScotlandsPeople? I have heard much about this in the last few years and have been waiting patiently for them to come online.

Hi Sheila,

Have you ever tried searching for your rellies at http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/ ? lots of Scottish Criminal Records are indexed there.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Sheila,

There has been no news on the Kirk Session records for a while. I would take that to mean that we won't see them in the near future.

All the best,

I have found newspaper archives useful in finding all sorts of information, from success at village flower shows to criminal convictions! Search for names of people or places and see what turns up. The archives are still being added to, so it's worth repeating searches from time to time.
Some are available through libraries, or pay-to-view online (e.g. the British newspaper archive, The Scotsman archive).

Hi Andrew & Isabel

That is bad news about the Kirk Session Records. :( I have been waiting forever for them to come online, always hearing that it would be "next year".

Isabel, looking through newspapers, especially if it regards a small area is a good idea, you never know what you may find. :)

Thank you both for your info.

Hello Sheila,

Just by using the free search at the British Newspaper Archive you can usually get a bit of an idea what it’s all about. If you find something that’s in the Glasgow Herald you can look it up on Google’s online version. You could even try that if it’s in another Scottish newspaper and looks like the type of story that would be repeated elsewhere. Otherwise you could ask here and maybe someone will be able to access it for you.

You can also access those newspapers at FMP, so keep an eye open for any freebies that may turn up at either place.

All the best,
Alan

Hi
Just a wee Thankyou to Isabell H for her Link to B. N. A. :D
I was browsing the forum yesterday and came across the post for criminal records, where you advised the person posting to use the BNA link. It got me thinking that I had never used this site before( thought it was just English newspapers  ) so I had a wee look and Suprise Suprise., :o :o I found the information surrounding my G grandfathers death in Perth. Ive been ](*,) off a brick wall for years trying to find the information about my G grandfather William Donnelly.

Happy ST Patricks Day

Good friend of mine always used to refer to this waiting forever as "in the fullness of time" and I learned to wait - because it does eventually happen. If you check the discussion on the OPR deaths that were coming to SP for years - they did eventually arrive - so like everyone, I just keep waiting for those Kirk Sessions - they will come in the fullness of time.

So pleased the newspapers were a success. :D
