Robert Lochhead Sculptor/ Boyd family connection

Post by Anniespangles » Sun Aug 18, 2013 12:36 am

Hi ,wondering if anyone can help out a wee bit? I am looking into a fella named Robert Lochhead and his family.Robert I think was born about 1853,he married Susan Logie in January 1871 she was a transferrer in a pottery. They were married and lived in Glasgow. On their Daughter Agnes Reid Lochhead marriage certificate to John Boyd in 1894 Robert Lochhead has an occupation of Sculptor. Is there anyway of finding out more about Robert via his occupation and how much hope is there of seing some of his sculptor work? Any info on any of the people mentioned above would be really intresting to me ,but Robert and Susan Lochhead have really got me

In 1881 and 1891 Robert, born around 1854 at Glasgow, describes himself as a stone cutter. By 1901 he is a superintendent at a saw mill.

76 St James Rd

Robert Lochhead 47 Superintendent Saw Mill
Susan Lochhead 48
Annie Lochhead 19
Mary Lochhead 17
Jeanie Lochhead 15
Susan Lochhead 12
John Lochhead 10
George Lochhead 6
Christinia Lochhead 4
Annie Lochhead 27
Robert Lochhead 2
James Lochhead 9 Mo

I tried to connect him to Wylie & Lochhead who were funeral directors in Glasgow but no luck so far.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annie,

His baptismal record can be found in the OPRs on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis. That gives you a baptism date, but no definite birth date (other than assuming it was not far before the baptism date). The witnesses to the baptism may well be family members (one is a Lochhead).

His death certificate, also available on the ScotlandsPeople website, lists him as a Firewood Depot Foreman.

The 1891 census describes him as a stone cutter. So, was he ever a sculptor, or had his daughter promoted him on the marriage lines? In the absence of any good evidence, I leave you to make your choice.

All the best,

AndrewP

I can’t see him listed as a Sculptor in the 1894-95 Glasgow Directory.

He was in the stone working industry for a while and maybe he was an amateur sculptor and did his work at home.

All the best,
Alan

Thanyou everyone for your help :D Just to add that this wee search was for my freinds husband, when I pointed out to him the stone mason/sculptor he was amazed as his brother (one of Robert Lochheads great grandsons) is a stone mason now living on Shetland! I find it amazing how genetics sometimes appears to unknowingly play apart through occupations of family members,if that makes sense

Hi Annie
It makes perfect sense to me. One example in my family line - my great grandfather was an early professional photographer; one of his daughters became a photographer although she never became a recognized professional; my sister was a freelance photographer and now one of my daughters is a talented freelance photographer. I firmly believe that we can inherit a whole range of aptitudes whether mechanical, mathematical or artistic. doesn't always happen of course.

P.S. I never got any of it :( Give me a camera and I can amputate heads, feet with nae bother at a'
