Liver Society

Post by OzScot » Sat Nov 23, 2013 10:26 am

I have been researching my Scottish ancestry and have come across a document entitled Assistant Inspector's Report, dated 1904, in relation to an application for poor relief that was applied for by my great grandmother. It appears that my great grandfather was not a well man and from his late 30s until his death at age 49 he spent several periods in poorhouse hospitals (apart from his initial treatment at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow).

Anyway, in the abovementioned report, there are some notes at the bottom of the document, including one that states "In the Liver Society". I am curious whether anybody knows what this means and would shed some light on this organisation and it's possible relevance to my ancestors.

Regards,

Ken Maxwell

It means he paid in to an insurance/pension fund, so he may have received some money from them when he was unable to work. This would be taken into consideration by the poorhouse inspector when he applied for help.
