On my greatgrandfather's DC (Barnhill Poorhouse) it states that his usual place of residence was Model Lodging House, Parkhead, Glasgow. What were these Model Lodging Houses, and were there any applications that had to be done that might still be extant?
Cheers

Hi Annpa
Basically such "models" were cheap lodging houses for the accommodation of itinerant workers, vagrants, and the less fortunate members of society, with very basic facilities for those who lived there.
A Google on "model lodging houses scotland" will provide a wealth of information on the history of the "models" in Scotland.
"Models" weren't restricted to the cities and large towns, but could also be found in places, - via my own Google above, - such as the small town/large village of New Cumnock!
I'm not aware of any records relating to those who lived in the "models" but that's not to say that there aren't such records in local archives.......... in this case I'd suggest an email to the Mitchell Library/Glasgow City Archives.

Glasgow Models
Hi Annpa,
There is a quite excellent book on Glasgow Models. Charts their history and gives when they opened, closed, addressses, some photies too!
Maybe apply locally for an inter-library loan of the book? Details of it are,
"Glasgow Common Lodging-Houses and The People Living in Them"
by Stuart I. A. Laidlaw, Medical Officer of Health, City of Glasgow 1946-1955.
It was published in 1956 (the year after Dr Laidlaw's death) by The Health & Welfare Committee of the Corporation of Glasgow.

Thanks for your prompt replies. I'll follow your advice and do a google search, and see if I can borrow the book from somewhere.
I think I'll leave the archivist for a little, I'm afraid I've been bothering him about the PoorHouse.
Cheers

Model lodging houses
Thank you all for your information about the model lodging houses. And especially to Moonwatcher's account of "The Model". With my greatgrandfather going from the Model in Parkhead to Barnhill, I can only hope that it was an improvement!
thoughtfully,
Annpa
