I have the death certificates for two ancestors, both of whom died in Govan Poorhouse. I have contacted the Mitchell Library Archivist who has confirmed that an application was made.
I wonder if it would be possible for anyone visiting the Mitchell, if they had any spare time, to check these out for me?
They are MARY HUGHES, MS McLACHLAN, Died 21March 1900
ARCHIVE REFERENCE D-HEW 17/1892 application NO 46376
HENRY HUGHES Died 14January 1904
ARCHIVE REFERENCE D-HEW 17/350.2 application NO 98601
I would be most grateful for any information anyone could find on these two people.
Thank you
Linda

I don't know when I'll be going to The Mitchell but I've taken a note of the applications and if nobody else posts the info I will look them up.

Hello AnnetteM
Thanks for your offer to look up the applications for me. I wish I could get up there myself but at the moment family commitments don't allow this. Thanks.

The date I had written for Henry's application was 9th Feb. 1891 but that does not make sense with the info given. I did look up quite a few applications today so it would not surprise me if I had got it wrong.
Some of the info is a bit conflicting even when compared to 1881 census.
Hopefully you will piece it all together.
Regards,
Annette M

Hi Annette,
Thanks very much for the information. As you say, some of it doesn't quite fit but it's the correct family I'm sure. I've been trying to find where in England Ann Jane was born and it answers that. I'll take some time to digest it all and try to figure it out.
Thanks for all your help and the time you've taken to look for this.
Linda

Hello skaville, skaville wrote:I too have just discovered an ancestor dying in Govan poorhouse. If anyone is going to Mitchells could they have a look for me please.
Louisa Keating 15th february 1896. Aged 51.
Why would she be in the poorhouse when her husband didnt die for another 12 years!!!!
If you give me her maiden name and where she was born I'll have a look.
As to the reason - well hopefully the application is there and will tell you.
Kind regards,
Annette M
