Irish Harry and English Jimmy

Post by hudggy » Thu Jan 19, 2006 7:00 pm

Hi All,

I have been trying to find anyone who can help me fill in the gaps on Irish Harry and English Jimmy. They were a couple of wide boys for a better discription around early 1900s in Glasgow. I belive they ran a few drinking clubs and other types ie gambling. Irish Harry was my great grandmothers second husband a Henry Devine but I never could get the family to give me a lot of information on them. So if anyone knows anything could they get in touch. :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Thanks in advance Hudggy

Hi Hudggy,

I suppose you may have seen this site before, but it would be the place to ask. They know so much there about local and recent history!

Greetin's Hudggy
I doubt if anyone could pick up on "Irish Harry or English Jimmy" too colloquial.
There would have been a few "Irish" Tom Dick or Harry's.
However, I doubt if there would be many "English Jimmy's" about.
Do you have his last name?
You should have no problem tracing Harry Devine.
Though there were 100s of Devine's in the Glasgow are at the turn of the century, I doubt if there were too many Harry's.
I have a few Devine records on file.
Nina has given you a guid site, especially if your Family were from the East End.

Hi There,

Thanks I have put my request on Glasgapals site as you suggested Nina hope I get some feed back. Davie I do not have a surname for English Jimmy, as I said Henry Devine (Harry) was my great grandmothers second husband. With this English Jimmy I beleive the ran the undergound clubs for drinking and gambling in the Maryhill/Cowcaddens area of Glasgow. They were even mentioned on STV in the 70s Bill Knox Tales of Crime I contacted STV but they could not find the tape of that show. I also bought Bill Knox's book about the stories on the show it is not there. So I am down to hopeing that someone reads this and knows the story.

Regards Robert
