Churchyard in Pencaitland.....

Post by Scozzie » Sat Jan 21, 2006 11:29 am

Is there a nice person out there who lives near Pencaitland? I just found the death entry for my 4th great-grand aunt (something like that) who died 22/11/1856, and she's buried in the Church yard at Pencaitland. How difficult would it be to find her gravesite and take a photograph?

Churchyard in Pencaitland

Scozzie,
Please let us know her name, also if she was married. I don't pass Pencaitland very often but could keep your information in mind if no-one else lives nearby. I don't think the graveyard is very big but have no idea what condition the stones will be in.

Hi Scozzie,
There are two graveyards in Pencaitland, one by the Church and the other, a newer one. The one by the Church has inscriptions online http://www.ndhm.org.uk/page_12.htm My Husbands family came from Pencaitland, but sadly couldn't find any of them with gravestones. Most of the stones are pretty legible, except for the really old ones, so if there is a stone you should be able to read it at that date. I am sorry that i can't go and take pics for you but I don't get up that way very often, but if you give me the name I'll keep a look out for it on my research.

Hi Rach & Caraid, thanks for your generous offers! I'll have a look at that website too.
My gx aunt: Born Euphemia Kinlay 11 Dec 1775, married to Robert Watt, died 27 Nov 1856. The death entry just states she was buried in the churchyard at Pencaitland, I don't know which one. If this helps, their children were William, Euphemia, John, James, Robert, George, Ebenezer & Matthew, and her parents were John Kinlay & Euphemia (or Euphan) Logan.

I had a look at the website and found:
Stone Number A16, WATT Robert died 1816 Age 47, & Euphemia died 1829 Age 28. Right family, not the same people. I wonder where they are?

Hi Scozzie,
I think they are the right people, Robert Watt, HIS DAUGHTER Euphemia & son Robert. The Euphemia is the right age for the daughter born 1801 in Gladsmuir. By the way, who was the informant on the dc. Had a look at the IGI and although all entries are submissions, there seems to be plenty of info to work on.
On FreeCen I got
1851/708 Gladsmuir Enum 4 Folio 0 Pg 14 Schedule 41 Macmerry
WATT Euphemia Head Widow 75yrs born Tranent

and

1851/708 Gladsmuir Enum 4 Folio 0 Pg 13 Schedule 40 Macmerry
WATT William Head Marr. 51yrs Blacksmith & Farmer 9 acres born Gladsmuir
WATT Charlat Wife Marr. 51yrs born St. Cuthberts
WATT Charlat Daugh. 14yrs born Portobello
WATT William Son 12yrs born Portobello
WATT Marion Daugh. 10yrs Scholar born Portobello
WATT Euphemia Daugh. 8yrs Scholar born Portobello

I think this may be Robert & Euphemia's son. FreeCen is so annoying cause it always comes up as server is busy just when you are getting somewhere, so couldn't check for ay more.

Thanks Caraid, for the census details.

It is the burial place of Euphemia Kinlay (married name Watt) I am looking for. I do realise that the William and Euphemia listed are her husband and daughter. I'm wondering if there are more buried there than are listed?

Hi Scozzie

A long shot here and i may be repeating myself or you may have already done so  . But as you know when they died which would give you a rough estimate of when they were buried and you know where they were intered (?), geographical locations permitting, have you thought about phoning the actual church or graveyard ? assuming there is a number. In my experience of just popping along to the grave diggers shed - sorry, office - they are extremely helpful and from them you will find out everything like who was buried in the same plot, how deep it was dug (? !) ect. Do you know for sure they would have had a headstone as few of my found ones have so far - too poor ! but family along the way have managed to put one on the old graves as a mark of respect and remembrance.

Tracey

Edit - assumed a headstone was involved. Sadly some of mine are now just square pieces of dry dirt but still findable thanks to the grave diggers !

Thanks Tracey. I originally thought if someone lived near to the Pencaitland graveyard, they may be kind enough to see if there was a headstone. It's not really important, I was just interested. I don't think I'll be telephoning the graveyard (if I could find the number) from here (hubby already gives me dirty looks when the credit card statement comes in with SP $$$ on it - I wonder what he'd say if I started telephoning graveyards?)

Hi Scozzie

I hope you get a result. If some kind person pops in to the graveyard and meets those diggers and they get their books out it may not take that long to find them but the volunteer may get wrapped up in all the information in them !!
Shame those sheds dont have email

Good luck anyway
