Here in Canada if someone dies their death announcement is put in the papers with next of kin past and present listed how can I find something like that on someone in Scotland?

Not unusual to find that information in newspaper "intimations" and funeral reports in newspapers in Scotland in the 1800s and several decades at least into the 1900s, but less normal in modern times.

One of my newspaper death notice,s is an epic ! the others are a few lines noting spouce what they did for a living and where they lived. These were 1877 -1880,s.
What era and location were you hoping to find a death notice ?.

In areas with a daily local newspaper, there is generally quite a good coverage of deaths announcements / funeral notices. The amount of information in them is somewhat varied. For older people, it tends to refer to children, grandchildren and the like. sometimes naming them, sometimes not. For the death of a younger person there is more likelihodd of information about parents or siblings.

In areas served by a local paper that is printed weekly, the funeral may be past by the next print day. I remember seeing funeral notices in shop windows in Kirkwall for that reason.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

I should also have mentioned "In Memoriam" notices on the anniversary of the death, which could/can be quite detailed in terms of info on relations.
