The April 2006 edition of the UK Family Tree Magazine has Part 2 of the article "Hospitals for the Mentally Ill" which includes a reference to www.institutions.org.uk which is said to have a list of asylums in England, Wales and Ireland, along with a note of where the records have been deposited.
While it looks like there is excellent information in realtion to England (I diidn't explore the site's resources for Wales or Ireland) there is sadly as yet very little information on Scottish institutions. You'll find more in other posts in this forum.
Hopefully, eventually, the Scottish coverage will be as good as that for poorhouses which can already be found at http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/ ... d.html#ABD .
Remember that many institutions which started out as poorhouses later became mental asylums or general hospitals.
