OPR Hugh LOGAN .....

Post by Dibit » Fri Feb 24, 2006 10:14 pm

Hello,

I am looking for information on my 5GGrandfather Hugh Logan born abt 1760 in Dalry, Ayrshire may have been Kilwinning. I don't know for sure.

He was married to Elizabeth Frew in Kilwinning and I beleive they also had a Ceremony in Dalry. Is this common, having 2 ceremonies?

I am trying to fin the parents name sof this couple.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Dibit,

I take it the two marriage ceremonies that you refer to are two references on the IGI for this couple. The OPRs more commonly record the calling of the banns, rather than the marriage ceremony itself. It was common for the banns to be called in the home parishes of both the bride and the groom. I think this is what you are reading. In fact, the calling of the banns in both parishes is no proof that the marriage ever happened. In most cases the marriage will have happened, but certainly not all.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Barnes relatives

Post by LindaMc » Sun Feb 26, 2006 2:20 am

Hi Dibit

I notice you are researching Barnes relatives. Me too. Mine are from Ballantrae, Ayrshire; Kilmarnock, Ayrshire and Glasgow. (my paternal grandfather) I have also just discovered a Logan side but they are related to Mctaggart (my paternal grandmother) from Campsie,Stirling;
and Glasgow. Any chance there is a connection?

Hi Linda and Dibit

Since you are both researching family in the Dalry, Kilwinning area, I would recommend a look at Kenny Monaghan's site.

www.monaghan95.freeserve.co.uk/

Amonst the many other names are numerous Frews and a few Logans.

All the best

OPR Hugh Logan

Post by SearcherUK » Mon Feb 27, 2006 3:07 am

Hello Dibit,
I am also a researcher of Ayrshire's Logan and Frew families. I am interested in your post, as I do have both Elizabeth Frew and Hugh Logan noted in the data base, but have not at this moment connected them to either of my Frew or Logan families.
I am showing only one child born:

James born abt 1798 d. April 27 1871 in Dalry. Details of his death cert:

Death in the Parish of Dalry, Ayrshire
James Logan, age 73yrs, April 27, 1871 at Dalry,
Single, occupation: Weaver,
Father: Hugh Logan, Shoemaker (dec)
Mother : Elizabeth Frew (dec)
Witness: James Logan, Nephew.

Can you give me any further information that you might have in regards to the family that may help us to find the ancestry of both Hugh Logan and Elizabeth Frew?

Cheers,
Linda Bell

Me too on the Barnes & Ballantrae.Margeret Barnes married Andrew Torrance & produced James Torrance 1850.In 1851 she is living Dalry with Andrew(Leswalt/Stanraer.)30.Margeret29 & James1-both Ballantrae.
By 1855 she is deceased & I don't know her parents.I think James was their only child.

Hello and Thanks for the replies...

in reply to the Hugh LOGAN - Elizabeth FREW research. My Logan familes stem from Dalry and Larkhall area. Hugh and Elizabeth had a least 2 children. James and Hugh. From the death cert mentioned you can see that it was James nephew James Logan that signed for his death cert, this was I believe Hugh's son. I do not have my reference info at hand but will have a look for it. I was able to find some info at freecen in the 1841 census.
I beleive it may have been the Scotlandspeople website that proves Hugh Logan b. 18 Oct 1791 son of Hugh Logan abt 1760.

Linda can you tell me where your line comes in here.

My Barnes family is from the Dunbartonshire area for at least 4 generations and then back to ireland which I have yet to trace. It seems joette and LindaMC may have a connection though.

I see you are researching Boyles in Dumbartonshire too.Any relation to the Boyles that had the shop on Dumbarton Rd at the foot of Mountblow Road in Dalmuir?Noel was one of the brothers. Most Dalmuir folk still call it Boyles or Noel Boyles to this day.
I know both brothers are buried in Old Kilpatrick Cemetery it brings back childhood memories& I recall stealing a tin of Creamola Foam from there & then dodging into the toilets at the foot of Mountblow Rd.to dilute it at the sink.Yeuch& bad consience

Barnes-Ballantrae

Post by LindaMc » Tue Feb 28, 2006 12:27 am

Hello Joette

I have a Margaret Barnes, the sister of my GGGrandfather Samuel Barnes.
She was born in Ballantrae in 1826, parents John Barrons and Elizabeth McCandlish who were married in Ballantrae in 1825.
Do you think this is her? If so let me know as I have her on the 1841 Census in Kilmarnock.

Yes please this very well could be her.I don't know her parentage as she died before Stat.Reg & I cannnot find a confirmed Birth for her on IGI or OPR.
The dates are right & she gives Ballantrae in the 1851 Census as her Birthplace.Have all my fingers& toes crossed-unusual in that she has upped her age to 29 for the 1851 Census but as her husband has shaved off four years maybe they decided to share the difference!
Hey that means if this is right then we are rellies!!! Poor you!
