My O'Brien's are the most obvious potato famine escapists in my tree....had a son in 1844 in Co. Leitrim, but had another son in 1851 Glasgow. Mother's poorhouse record puts date of immigration right at 1845.

I love it...they must habve been such battlers!

Happy St Pat's Day all!

I have turned up a few too - no wonder I couldn't find them on SP! My great-great grandfather, George Berry was born in Ireland c1840 and by the 1861 census he was lodging in Govan age 22. All the census says is "Ireland" - isn't it infuriating?? :( It seems my father went over when he was very young to visit family (c.1920) and all I know is that he went to Dublin. Maybe one day .........

Happy St Patrick's day to you all.

Irish ruminations.

Post by Thrall » Fri Mar 17, 2006 10:10 pm

Last week, rooting through the family deed box, which proved remarkably lacking in hidden treasure etc., I did however stumble upon my grandfather´s passport, with a stamps from 1941 for a week´s trip in winter to N. Ireland. Why would an elderly semi-retired chemist from Burntisland travel in wartime to Northern Ireland?

He was the informant on his mother in law´s DC and obviously knew of the Irish connection, though he did not ever mention it to his children. No reason is known to the surviving family for the trip - was he digging????? How easy was it to cross to Donegal in 1941 from N. Ireland. Even to go to N. Ireland then, he needed a passport. Just ruminating........ :?: :?:

Good hunting,

Thrall

Hi Thrall:

I see you are in Iceland. If you go to the General Discussion, there's someone looking for translation from Icelandic, do you or know anyone that can help?
