Poorhouse Search Please!.....

Post by Caroline » Wed May 31, 2006 8:55 pm

I was wondering if anyone going to the Mitchell could look up the poor house applications for my relative Stewart/Stuart Taylor.

He died in Woodilee Asylum in 1885 from tertiary syphilis, but the records from there say that he was transferred to Woodilee from Barnhill Poor House in September 1885.

I know he was born in Glasgow in 1851, but in 1881 he was working in a cotton mill in Lancashire so it would be interesting to find out how he came to be back in Glasgow.

Thanks,

Caroline

Hello Caroline,

I had a look for the application today but could not find one in the index.
What were the names of his wife and children? Perhaps one of them made the application.

Hi Annette,

Thanks very much for taking the time to look this up today.

Afraid I don't have much more info on Stuart. I do know his wife was called Agnes and they married in 1883, so I suppose the application could be under her name. Both his parents were dead by then so that rules them out. He also had 3 siblings living in Glasgow though, John, Janet (Booth), and Agnes (Malcolm).

If you are up at the Mitchell in the near future I'd be grateful if you could have another quick look and if there is an application just get me the reference number and I'll get the Mitchell to send a copy.

Thanks again,

Caroline

Hi Annette,

Sorry I've taken so long to get more details on this , but I've been unable to use the computer for a couple of months due to more eye problems. However managed a quick shot on SP today and found out that it was an AGNES PICKEN he married in 1883. Don't think they had any children together, but she had 2 sons to her previous husband, named Cornelius and Richmond! Also they were living in Ruby Street when they married.

Would be really grateful if you could spare a minute to look her up when you're next at the MItchell as I'd love to find out more about Stuart.

Thanks,

Caroline

Hello Caroline,

I'm sorry I tried variations on the names but I can't find anything indexed at The Mitchell on this family.

Hope things are well with your health.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hi Annette,

Thanks so much for looking I really appreciate it.

Unfortunately my health problems continue, but at least researching my family tree takes my mind off them for a while!
