Combination Poorhouse?.....

Post by emanday » Tue Jul 18, 2006 6:29 pm

Just discovered that one of my ancestors died in Upper Strathearn Combination Poorhouse in 1894 :( , purportedly aged 63, (this is in doubt as the death was registered by a daughter from her 2nd marriage who didn't know her stepmother's father's given name).

What can they have meant by a "combination" poorhouse?

How and where might I get access to details of this poorhouse's records?

nelmit, your a star =D>

From that site (hitting links like mad), found myself on the Perth & Kinross Archive site.

Just flashed off an email to the archivist...

Emanday

Most poorhouses in Scotland, around 2/3rds, were the result of the co-operation of a varying number of adjacent parishes in terms of building a joint workhouse, - hence the term "combination" !!

Other pages on the site referenced by Annette M gives fuller details.

So simple when you know
