Cricky jings.
Ah think that is all of them gone now.
As far as I am aware the Barrowland is only used as a venue for rock and Irish bands these days.
Jist wunnert if oany o yoosyins had memories of the auld dance halls in yer ain middens.
The blokes best chat up lines.
The worst wans the Lassies heard.
And did everyone use the term “lumber” , when getting’ aff wey somewan at the jiggin’?
Or is that just the Weegie term?
Oany Weegies mind dizzie corner?
Bit like the Gestapo here.

I dont know much abot the jiggin in Glasgow except that in the late 1930's? or during the war. My late faither used to get in the dancin for free, as he was a dab hand at the dancin and he would teach the lassies to dance, (he had the Fred Astaire gene
oh! and he had a fine tenor voice too) I was too young and born in the 50's
I vaguely remember the Palais being mentioned, but memory may be playing tricks on me
He had a special pair of shoes that were just for dancin too

Or "are ye fer the Up"
Dennistoun Palais was my main stompin ground. The jiving was great there.
The Albert wis fur old yins. well older than me at 15 or 16.
Wouldn't dared have taken a lumber, ma old man wid have kilt mae.
Green"s wiz definitley fer the older more shall I say "worldly" crowd.
The Locarno used tae have dance sessions at lunchtime and when I was working in Blythswood Square we wid go down there and forget lunch.
Ah think we wis all a bit mair innocent in those days.

As a teenager in the late 60's jigging for me and my pals in Ayrshire were the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock and the Bobby Jones in Ayr . Glasgow bands popular then were the Poets ; Dream Police ; etc .
We used to talk about eyeing up the talent or looking for a lumber the DIZZY to us was when you were STOOD-UP when going on a date and it was better not to let on to anyone if you were STOOD-UP.
If you were going steady with someone you were described as WINCHING
The BIG BANDS were just coming to an end although the Bobbys' still had them but there was the cellar below for the young groupes.
The Pavillion in Ayr still had Tommy Truesdale and there was the Troon Concert hall which still had the Big Bands but were also coming to an end .
My Grandfather and his brother were in an Ayrshire based dance band in the early 1900's and according to a newspaper photo i have they played in venues around Ayrshire up until about the 1930's but I don't know where they actually played.
Rita.

Mine the "White Elephant" on Sauchiehall Street.I never went there very often as a non-smoker I found it too smoky an atmosphere. No problem with the smoking ban now in place but alas I think my Jigging days are done.
Most off my dancing took place in various Church Buildings around Glasgow-Drumchapel,Paisley,Pollock,Dumbarton etc.
A big group off us would head off to the "Disco" & depending on the destination & how "flush" we were we would walk, bus & even ferry there or a combination off all three.
It was at such a disco that my wee sis met her husband.I remember the excitement when a group of good-looking American submariners from the Holy Loch turned up at such a dance.Several friends ended up marrying them.
My fav spot was in front of my bedroom mirror when I was Cherry Gillespie from Pan's People!
