Glasgow accomodations - opinion

Post by HeatherV » Sat Oct 21, 2006 12:57 pm

Visiting Glasgow next month and am planning to spend at least one day at the Mitchell (yippie !!!). Have been looking at accomodations in the West End and wonder if any members have seen or heard of either of these two places? One is a small hotel and one is a hostel. My pocketbook likes the cost of the hostel but am hesitant ...

They both appear to very convenient to the Mitchell.

Kelvingrove Hotel
944 Sauchiehall Street

Glasgow Hostel
8 Park Circus

Any opinions would be most welcome.

Heather,
Try www.tripadvisor.com - has reviews on both places.

There's many local hotels and guest houses.

Budget price accommodation can be found at http://www.ga-taxis.co.uk/glasgow.html

For the 2 that you named, see http://www.kelvingrove-hotel.co.uk/ .

The Glasgow Hostel on Park Circus is part of the Scottish Youth Hostels Association (SYHA), - since long open to all :!: , - see http://www.glasgowhostel.co.uk/ .

Back from Glasgow and enjoyed four nights at the Kelvingrove. So, if anyone is planning a visit, and would like a recommendation I would certainly suggest this hotel. Rate was very reasonable, located in the west end, about 10 minute walk to the Strathclyde Gen Centre. Staff are 'above and beyond' and could not do enough to assist or answer any questions that I had.

Cheers,

Heather

Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

25 minute walk (+/- depending on your state of fitness  ); 10 to 15 minute bus ride depending on the time of day; or, depending on how far the hotel is from one of Glesca's famous Underground stations, - there's one at Kelvinbridge, and one at Partick, probably 20 mins given the time to walk to the Underground station; and I don't think that there's a handy Glasgow urban (surface) railway station .......

The last tram ran in 1962, Auchenshuggle to Dalmuir (or was it the reverse :?: ) ...... mair's the pity  ..........

For info on Glasgow's unique Underground system, see http://mikes.railhistory.railfan.net/r048.html , but that site is more aimed at techies and railway afficionados.......

Also known as the "Clockwork Orange" ! - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_Subway

This choice of colour for a City Corporation in the West of Scotland of orange for its transport system has some rather interesting and very complicated consequences :!: :!: , - especially if I write Orange rather than orange, ..... Ohmigawd, - just where is this reply taking me ........ [woohoo] [5 cups] [5 cups] [5 cups]

Thanks David

Shame, i think that one is going to be a bit too far away.
I stayed in West George Street before which was great but would work out to be an expensive week if all goes ahead. I will watch this or any other space our members recommend accommodation in this area xmas:cool:

Hi Tracey,
As David mentions, and usually plenty buses - though streets can be busy before 9.30 am, and around 4.30 to 6.30 pm.
The nearest Subway station (Kelvinhall) is abt a 5 min walk west (abt 30yds west of the bottom of Byres Rd).
But the bus would be easier - and you can buy an "All day ticket".
Means you can jump on & off as many buses as you like, well er, all day.
--
Nice old City centre map.
My "yardstick" on Glasgow maps is the St. Enoch Station - if it's shown, then it's usually pre 1960-70s.
Partick Cross - renamed Kelvinhall.
Merkland St - renamed Partick.
Govan Cross - renamed Govan.
Copland Rd - renamed Ibrox.
--
Why couldn't they have just left the names as they were? There was no need to change them.
(ok - i'm just a grumpy auld moaner!)

Dis that no affect ra Francie and Josie song?..........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPtG2l0Dsss is not what I was looking for but it's an intriguing use of Schiller's Ode to Joy as set to music by Beethoven :!:

Ah!, - here we are .......

'I know a lot of folk go fancy places at the Fair
They like to sail in steamers or to hurtle thro' the air
But I've a fav'rit route that goes to many ports of call
Although unless you look'd you'd never notice it at all
There's Partick Cross and Cessnock, Hillhead and Merkland St
George's Cross and Govan Cross where all the people meet
West St, Shields Rd, the trains go round and round
You've never lived unless you've been on the Glasgow Underground'

(Cliff Hanley and Ian Gourley)

That's only verse one....

Can anyone find the tune on the www?

See after my signature for the complete words

David

I know a lot of folk go fancy places at the Fair
They like to sail in steamers or to hurtle thro' the air
But I've a fav'rit route that goes to many ports of call
Although unless you look'd you'd never notice it at all

Chorus:

There’s Partick Cross and Cessnock, Hillhead and Merkland Street,
George’s Cross and Govan Cross where all the people meet
West Street, Shields Road, the train goes round and round
You’ve never lived unless you’ve been on The Glasgow Underground.

They tell me that Majorca is a dandy place to be
Or Switzerland or Italy or even Gay Paree,
There’s many lovely beauty spots upon the Clyde of Firth
But I would rather always travel doon below the earth.

Chorus:

There’s Partick Cross and Cessnock, Hillhead and Merkland Street,
George’s Cross and Govan Cross where all the people meet
West Street, Shields Road, the train goes round and round
You’ve never lived unless you’ve been on The Glasgow Underground.

There’s names that ring like magic that can thrill you through and through
They seem to call you back wi’ an enchantment never knew
There’s places far away are like a song that’s sweetly sung
You’ll roll them round your mooth and feel them slidin’ aff yer tongue.

Chorus:

There’s Partick Cross and Cessnock, Hillhead and Merkland Street,
George’s Cross and Govan Cross where all the people meet
West Street, Shields Road, the train goes round and round
You’ve never lived unless you’ve been on The Glasgow Underground.

I never liked the stourie winds, the showers or the snaw,
The sun can get too burny and the sleet’s no nice at a’
But I don’t mind the climate now as on my way I go
The dolce vita’s waiting there a hundred feet below.

Chorus:

There’s Partick Cross and Cessnock, Hillhead and Merkland Street,
George’s Cross and Govan Cross where all the people meet
West Street, Shields Road, the train goes round and round
You’ve never lived unless you’ve been on The Glasgow Underground.

For the princely sum of 79p you can download it from http://www.tradtunes.com/album_details. ... um_id=2424 , but it has to be free out there somewhere?! [help]
