CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Do you ever think of things you were told as a child and you had the wrong concept.

I remember a lady moved into a house a couple of doors up. She didn't speak to anyone and she had blonde hair and very white skin.

I remember asking who she was and was told "Mrs. K--- , she's a WHITE RUSSIAN"
I then asked if there was any other kind of Russian and was told the others were Reds.

This satisfied my curiosity because she was obviously white and I knew if I saw a Red Russian I would recognise them by their colour.

I was very young, I'll use that as my excuse for being dumb.

Can anyone else remember something similar

One thing I remember growing up, was a friend's sister was getting married and everyone kept crying about it.

I asked at home why everyone at the house was crying when they were getting ready for a party - I certainly wouldn't be crying if I were getting dressed up in new clothes and going to a party.

Turns out the eldest daughter was getting married 'outside the church'. I thought that was a spectacular place to get married, as our church had wide sweeping stairs at the front.

The house that I grew up in was right on the edge of Ayr racecourse and one of the steeplechase jumps was right opposite our house, with the stands etc, half a mile away on the other main side of the racehourse.

One race day the inevitable happened and a horse fell and broke a leg at the jump 75 yards away from us; my father announcing "They'll have to shoot it now!,", to which my reply was "What happens if they miss?", imagining that the shot was from the other side of the racecourse........

My dad's mum died when I was 6 and was in hospital for 2 years before that, so I was very wee when we used to visit her at home. I always remembered that she used to have a parrot that was let out of its cage to fly round the kitchen.

It was only a couple of years ago that it came up in conversation with my mum who looked at me as if I was mad - turns out it was only a budgie

I still prefer my parrot memory!

I had been told and firmly believed that the grass in England was pink. What a disappointment the first time I crossed the border. I discovered that it was green, just like ours!

I was convinced that I remembered actually being born. Finally one day, my Mother said in exasperation, "OK, Anne, where were you born? 16 e... Street, I said and went on to describe the big event as I usually did.... upstairs in the front room where there was a big roasting fire, etc..... Mum's next question, "OK now, what's this address? 29 T.....Drive, I said.

That's when it dawned on me. As my mother had tried to explain over the years, I had heard the story of my birth so often, I really thought I remembered it.

I was quite disappointed and won't tell you how old I was before I finally realized I didn't remember the big event.

Hi all
A new shop had opened in our nearest city and my mother was looking forward to going for a look. I head about this shop for a couple of weeks before we went, so the name of it was firmly stuck in my head.

When we did go to the big city to go shopping I was completely puzzled...what was this C&A shop doing here?? I thought we were going to a place which sounded like the stuff you had with salad: "Ceyonnaise."

I remember my first ever encounter with Chinese food when I was about 8. My mum & dad and some rellies were having a wee gathering and I was allowed to stay up and have something to eat. I had soup with bamboo shoots in it and for years thought bamboo was a kind of wee chicken type bird. I remember saying it was a shame for the wee bamboos! I bet the adults had a good laugh at my expense!

My Father had always told us that if we sat too close to the fire the marrow in our spine would melt & we would end up as a "wee greasy spot" on the carpet.
I to think how old I was before I realised that it was an impossibilty& to this day I never sit with my back to a heat source

I am not yer hysterical type but when MY MOTHER paid no attention to me when I was bleeding to death.......Don't know what age I was but I'd read that a cut vein resulted in death, immediately so therefore the scrape on the vein on my ankle was life threatening, but did she care?????Not even a bit of Elastoplast or a kiss better.
Always knew I'd been mixed up at birth so then why am I looking for the following names??????I'm bound to be related to Mary Qof S/an Indian Chief/Cleopatra
