I have relatives described as paupers in the parish of Torosay around 1860-1890.
Does anyone know if there are records for this parish and where they are?
Also i am thinking of popping down to the mitchell one lunchtime, if i am organised do you think it will possible to see the poor record for one of my ancestors in about an hour? or should i leave longer and go after work ?
Thanks in advance

I think you will need to leave more time for that as the staff there are constricted by time too and I would think they wouldn't be able to get stuff from the archive over lunchtime. They also stop taking requests about 4.00. Perhaps you should phone/email and arrange something. Sure they would help as they are always really good when you go.

Hi David
If they were resident in the Union Poorhouse they would show on the 1881 census.
Go to http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html ... 1881.shtml
Try there before you visit the Mitchell. But go to the Mitchell at some point when you have a day or two to spare

Hi David,
According to http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Mull/Mull.shtml the records from Mull Combination Poorhouse are in Argyll & Bute Archives in Ardrishaig or Mull Museum, rather than the Mitchell Library.
The description given is that the records kept are more minutes of meetings rather than the inmate's personal records.
All the best,
AndrewP

If it is the Archive room you want to visit it is open till 8 o'clock on a Tuesday. You will definitely be able to search the indexes and as long as there is somebody to retrieve the records it will not be a problem viewing them.
However sometimes due to staff shortages they have 'no production' and in that case you can leave a note of the records you want to view and they will look them out for the next time you visit. They are open late again on Thursday.
Hope this helps and makes sense.
