How to usefully spend this Saturday in the West of Scotland

Post by David Douglas » Wed Dec 27, 2006 12:22 am

I'm in Renfrew over the Christmas holidays (I live in Denmark), and with all the family stuff over Christmas, it looks like I'll only get the chance to do any research this Saturday, the 30th.

Has anyone a good suggestion as to how I could make the best use of this coming Saturday in genealogical searches, within reasonable driving distance of Renfrew? Edinburgh if necessary, but preferably closer. I'm not familiar with what the Mitchell library has, the local Family History centres or local archives (if they're open on Saturdays)

I'm mostly interested right now in OPRs and kirk session records from about 1750 to 1854 - Renfrewshire, Ayrshire, West Lothian, Stirlingshire, Argyll (only Easdale). Northern Ireland also, but that's probably asking too much.

Hello David,

It looks like the best from your wish list can be obtained at the Mitchell Library.

--> OPRs held at the Mitchell Library <--

--> Family History Collection held at the Mitchell Library <--

It may be worth a phone cal to the Mitchell Library to confirm that they are open this Saturday - no early closing for the holiday weekend.

The Kirk Session records are held in the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh, which is closed on Saturdays.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi David,
As Andrew suspected - the Mitchell is only open for the half day this coming Sat (30th).
And you would be best to phone them to check exactly when closing.
But you could still get a good few hours in. Enjoy yourself!
Jack
ps - seems it's 12.30.

Thanks, I'll try the Mitchell. Actually, it looks as if I also have Friday afternoon to spend, so it should be quite productive.

All the best for the New Year,

David
