A Richt Guid Burns Nicht tae Ane 'n' A [5 cups] [5 cups] [5 cups]

BTW, an Ayrshire terminological exactitude :!: , it's "bashed neeps and champit tatties" :shock:

This song (words by James Thomson and music by James Booth) is frequently sung at the Burns Suppers around the world.

The Star o' Rabbie Burns

There is a star whose beaming ray
Is shed on ev'ry clime.
It shines by night, it shines by day
And ne'er grows dim wi' time.
It rose upon the banks of Ayr,
It shone on Doon's clear stream -
A hundred years are gane and mair,
Yet brighter grows its beam.

Chorus
Let kings and courtiers rise and fa',
This world has mony turns
But brightly beams aboon them a'
The star o' Rabbie Burns.

Though he was but a ploughman lad
And wore the hodden grey,
Auld Scotland's sweetest bard was bred
Aneath a roof o'strae.
To sweep the strings o'Scotia's lyre,
It needs nae classic lore;
It's mither wit an native fire
That warms the bosom's core.

Chorus

On fame's emblazon'd page enshrin'd
His name is foremost now,
And many a costly wreath's been twin'd
To grace his honest brow.
And Scotland's heart expands wi' joy
Whene'er the day returns
That gave the world its peasant boy
Immortal Rabbie Burns.

Chorus

Meaning of unusual words:
gane=gone
mair=more
fa'=fall
aboon=above
hodden gray=coarse homespun cloth made from a mixture of black and white wool
strae=straw

Me, my two English born children and my English son-in-law have just finished our very own Burns Supper! My son-in-law even addressed the Haggis :D and a very good job he did too :D

My son-in-law and I are real Haggis lovers - My daughter has excellent taste :lol: but she and my son only like it well enough to eat it on the 25th, but will NOT have it any other time.

While I was back in Scotland for a few years and the daughter and her husband visited I had to make sure one of our meals was REAL Scottish Haggis for his sake!

Hello all from Nova Scotia ( New Scotland in Latin),
I saw in the papers here that it was Robbie Burns day ( Not that I didn't know it just goes with the rest of my day is all.) I had a night shift at work ( a grocery shop) It was a little slow so I usually amuse myself by harrassing my customers.As I was ringing through 1 older gets order I asked him if he was rushing home for his Haggis tonight."No" he said " I never eat any of that foreign French food"There were quite a few more funny answers but that was my favorite by far.Just so you know there were at least 2 Parades here in Halifax before the piping of the Haggis at the local Hotel restaurants .So I guess all the peeps with Scots background were on the other side of the bridge :D .
Well I better head off now . Only 3 weeks till St Paddy's day. Have to make sure I have a good spot picked to watch the parade.
Happy Hunting,
HeatherH

Oh David you had me in floods of tears-my Daddy used to sing that song when he had imbibed a few of the amber nectars.
I can still remember hiding my head in shame under the blankets as he weaved home along Dumbarton Rd after Scotland beat England singing that tune.He had celebrated well but not too wisely! :oops: His voice was fairly distinctive & I was "black affronted" as was my Mum.My sister & I were so :oops: to face our friends the next day.
Happy Birthday Rabbie & also my Auntie Jennifer in Idaho who had the good taste to be born on the Bard's birthday.
I am hoping to go to a "Burnt" Supper in Livingston tom evening!

Given the stramash over the Standard Life executive who used the phrase "n*****r in the woodpile", and the fact that I'm not allowed to say "black sheep" on air, then I fear that we might have to ban the phrase "black affronted" otherwise the PC polis will come after us :shock:
