Smyllum Orphanage

Post by sadoolan » Sun Jan 28, 2007 9:50 pm

Could someone please do a look up or tell me where I can find information on Smyllum, we have been told that my husbands grandfather MICHAEL DOOLAN and his sister were in Smyllum after their mother died in the late 1880's 1890's. I have tried to na avail to get census info on this location. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi Sadoolan
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D
I have tried to na avail to get census info on this location
Can you tell us where you have looked for this information already?
Have you looked for them by name in the 1891 census on the Scotland People site? (link at top of page)
You have given no age indication...could this be him?
1891 DOLAN MICHAEL M 8 LANARK /LANARK 648/00 008/00 031

I don't know the area myself, but this post suggests where information about the Lanark Orphanage might be found:

Sadoolan,

Unless I am mistaken Smyllum was an orphanage in Lanark, run by the Catholic Church. I know that there are Roman Catholic Archives somewhere and I'm sure someone here would be able to direct you to them.

Hope that helps
