Hi Joyce,

My Grandfather was a Bonner. Family myth says he came to Scotland, (Glasgow), as a 3 year old. but I have already confirmed that it was probably HIS father who came over shortly after his birth.

That family seems to have originated in Londonderry. That, I'm afraid, is about as far as I have got, escept that it might have been John Bonner and Martha Jane Hamilton, My (not confirmed) Great Grandparents, who first came to Glasgow.

The name has been registered - Bonner, Bonnar, Bonar so far in my research on Scottish records. What it is in Irish records will probably be as variable.

I have some Bonars too, who also originate from Ireland - Donegal (St Johnstone?).

James Bonar married Rose Ann Colquhoun April/May 1858.

They appear on the 1871 census living in Hamilton, with their 4 daughters.

Catherine - 11
Margaret - 6
Sarah Jane - 3
Rose Ann - 1

James Bonar died in Bridgeton, Glasgow in 1911 aged 70.

Rose Ann (Roseanna) went on to remarry William Wright in 1913 aged 59 (aye right!!!)

Roseanna died in 1933 aged 90.

James parents were - Robert Bonar and Catherine McLaughlin
Rosannas parents were - John Colqhoun and Margaret Walker (then Duffy).

No help to you what so ever, but perhaps of interest to someone else.

For a fee, the oxfordshire family history society will research a name for you. I recently queried a family - it cost me 4 pounds & I had a response almost instantly. I didn't find the parish registers for my Oxfordshire parish available anywhere else.

A birth certificate for any of the children born after Jul 1837 would given the mother's maiden name.
