Malcolm Munro, where are you buried?

Post by speleobat2 » Wed Apr 04, 2007 12:06 am

When my sister was going through my parents papers last year, she found a picture of the gravesite where my great grandfather, great grandmother and two of their children are buried, but there was no identification as to the cemetary on the picture. It shows a large wall, posssilbly stone at the head of their site which has a sort of shield shaped plaque on it which says: Erected in loving memory of Malcolm Munro, Jeweler. Under his name is the name George with a line of writing that is unreadable, then the name Elsie Fraser with more writing that can't be read, then the name Mary Cadenhead with another line of writing that can't be read. The wall is very large, around six feet tall and continues to the left passed the next two gravesites. All of the sites are defined by stone curbing and the site to the left also has a plaque, this one with a large seashell engraved on it. The Munro family lived in Aberdeen from 1870 on, first at 36 Thomson St. then at 11 Diamond St. and finally at 9 Brighton Place.

Could someone familiar with Aberdeen give me a guess as to which cemetary might contain a grave monument wall of this sort or might at least be near to the area where these streets are located? Their ministers were all from the United Free Church if that helps. Malcolm died in 1905 and his wife, Mary, died in 1915. None of their names come up on the Monumental Inscriptions website.

Hi Carol,
Would it be possible for you to upload the photo to the gallery? It might ring a bell with someone. Instructions for uploading can be found here:

Sarah,

I don't have the picture at this moment. My sister does and she's 1057 miles away in upper Michigan. She also doesn't get along with computers so I'll have to wait for her to mail it to me.

The church that my grandparents were married in was the Bonaccord United Free Church and I think that all the streets I mentioned are in that area.

Caves: I have walked and crawled for several miles underground in undeveloped caves and was never bother by the experience, but on the only mine tour I've ever taken, I was nervous the whole time! I guess I just don't trust man made things.

Could be the Nellfield Cemetery. It is surrounded by a very large wall and has some curbing. It is also in the area of the streets you are talking about.

Another poster a while ago contacted the City Council and got a location for a lair with her rellies in it. I live just down the road so I could pop round and look or take a picture once the location of the stone is known.
