I can't remember for the life of me how I came across this site but it has me in knots every time I read through it.

Enjoy!

Mah hame toon is wan o' them three - Saltcoats; aka "Ra Costa Clyde"; or at least it once was. There's a few words there that were new to me but I left over 40 years ago.

I live in Largs, just up the road from the three towns, but it's mad to see how many words I recognise as being used in my home town of Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland, just over the pond. We never cried, we always 'girned'; although we never 'slevered', we did 'slabber', which is probably the same word; an ice cream was always a 'poke', and we couldn't wait for the 'pokey van' to arrive so we could order a '99 poke'! Whe it rained it 'teemed' or 'bucketted', and I knew a few 'bampot weans' in my time back home!

Great fun!

That was great to read over so many words and expressions I grew up with. My husband says he has added Scots to his list of languages as I keep teaching him different words.

We used the word "stank" for a manhole cover - maybe that was just in the Clydebank/Glasgow area though.
