St Nicholas, Uphall

Post by Isabel H » Tue Jul 10, 2007 10:18 pm

Does anyone know if MIs are available for St Nicholas, Uphall? They have been promised for ages on an Uphall website but have not appeared so far.
Alternatively, would SKS be willing to look in the churchyard to see if there is a stone for John Purdie who died Oct 1910? If there is I'd be really grateful for a transcription, or a photo if possible.
Thanks
Isabel

Hi Isabel
http://www.uphall.org/genealogy/stnicholasmi.htm
which , as you have noted, says that "Monumental Inscriptions for St Nicholas Church (in Strathbrock Parish) will be available shortly". Why not contact the webmaster there and ask how the progress on that one is going?

I see at http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/Lothians_MI.html there are some published MIs for Uphall, but it doesn't state which church, so is maybe not relevant to your search.
  • Lothians MI - West Lothian. Pre-1855 MI. A4, 178pp.
Abercorn, Bathgate, Bo’ness, Carriden, Dalmeny, Ecclesmachen, Kirkliston, Linlithgow, Livingstone, South Queensferry, Torphichen, Uphall and Whitburn.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Isabel

Strangely enough I contacted the webmaster of the Uphall site yesterday re the burial records at Uphall Cemetery

At the moment he and the WLFHS are transcribing them in a joint effort and they will be published when the task is completed.

Their transcriptions of the MI's from Strathbrock Churchyard have been put on the back boiler until the records for Uphall Cemetery have been organised.

On saying that there are no Purdies shown on the MIs for Strathbrock Churchyard, published byThe SGS in 1997

If he was buried in 1910 the chances are that he is in Uphall Cemetery as that opened in the late 1890's.

If you contact Donna Johnston at West Lothian County Council with the dates and names she will have a look for you and see if they are buried in Uphall Cemetery.

Contact her at Donna.JohnstonATwestlothian.gov.uk

Hi Jean
Thanks for the information re the MIs. The book published by the SGS is pre 1855 - too early for the family I'm interested in.
Despite the late date (1910) a newspaper obituary states that John Purdie's funeral took place to Uphall churchyard, but neither W. Lothian council nor the church itself has burial records for the churchyard. When I e-mailed the address on the church board (since the churchyard gates were padlocked when I visited), I was referred back to the library and the council who had already given me all the help they could. It may be there's nothing to find, but if there is a stone I'd like to know where it is and what the inscription is, as I think several of his children may also be buried there.

Hi Isabel

Yes, it's a pity that the church do not keep records of the burials there.

Yes, the gates are padlocked during the week, only open on Sundays, during Church services. This is due to vandalism.

What a pity I didn't know about your search earlier. I spent 2 hours in March going round the cemetery, finding my own ancestors.

I may be up there again later this year. If I am then I have taken a note of his name and will have a look for you. If there is a headstone, I'll take a photo for you. It's not too large a cemetery so if there is one I'll find it!!

Best wishes
Jean

Thank you for your reply Lesley , and Jean for that kind offer. If you do go back it would be great if you could find time to look.
Regards
Isabel

Just wanted to let you know I finally made it there on a Sunday and have found the stone in question, sadly broken, and the top part completely missing. Thanks again for your offer of help.
