Govan Poorhouse Record?

Post by paddyscar » Sat Jul 28, 2007 3:26 am

Mary Malley (M.S. Campbell) died in Govan Poorhouse June 3, 1899. Informant was Elizabeth McMillan (daughter) who gives Mary's age as 65. This age is not likely correct, as it would have made her 32 when her 20 year old, daughter Fanny Malley married Thomas Lipsett in 1867. Doubt about that age being correct increases since Mary had married 1) Martin Ross, Ploughman 2) Anthony Malley, Shipyard Labourer

According to the death registry, prior to the Poorhouse, Mary lived with Elizabeth at 9 Grace Dr., Govan Parish. The only other record I have of Mary (age 70) is that she lived with son-in-law Thomas Lipsett and family, at 88 Rose St., Govan (1891 census).

If anyone is able to provide this record, it would be much appreciated. I've not been able to find Mary and Anthony in the census, so I'm hoping for names of other children.

Hi Frances,

The following is taken from Ancestry.

I know the spelling is all wrong, but you may like to take a look at 1871 Census for Mary McAulty on SP, husband Anthony at 8 Old Vennel Glasgow College, this one caught my attention as there is a lodger with the family Margaret Ross.

In 1881 there is a Mary Malley, mother-in-law to the Ribben family, Main St MaryHill.

Thanks for your information Kathy. The old girl certainly has me thinking about taking a course in 'Alternative Spellings'. I guess part of it can be put down to 'accents', illiteracy and maybe just a bit of deliberate hiding.
