Greenock Industrial School for boys
Hello: I found an entry in the poorhouse books that said my grandpa spent some time in The Greenock Industrial School for boys around 1904. I have googled it but there doesn't seem to be any exact matches so I don't know which one to look at. Also some of the data is for reforms schools in general and I would like some on this one in particular. I realize that the mother who was giving the information may have made a mistake. does anyone have any information ? thank you. Donna

Donna,
You will get some background on industrial schools
at http://gdl.cdlr.strath.ac.uk/haynin/haynin0211.htm
also http://www.institutions.org.uk/reformat ... _staff.htm may help
I found this a useful starting point when I was looking for the Edinburgh Industrial Brigade.
Hope it helps

I may be way off track here but it might be worth contacting http://www.archives.gla.ac.uk/gghb/collects/ac12.html.
There was an industrial school at Captain Street in 1881 and when I googled Captain Street this came up.
Hopefully somebody with local knowledge may come up with something better.
Regards,

another possible source is try the Google Book Search.
I entered greenock industrial school and it came up with a number of books and newspapers, that might be useful

Hi Donna,
My grandfather was in a Greenock Industrial School in 1891 census. From the family stories, he was put there for 4 days for stealing a penny candy from one of the local shops.
Someone mentioned (on the old SP discussion group) that there were two such institutions in Greenock, one at Captain Street and the other at Roxburgh Street.

wow! Thank you to everyone for their help- I will get on to those websites and start looking. will also try for the books. Grandpa went there for truancy and at the time of the poor relief application was there for two years. After reading the application and more about this mother- I almost think he was better off! thanks again. Donna
