Hamilton Poorhouse Lookup Please

Could someone look this up for us.


Angus Campbell b.1796 Dumbarton occupation Weaver
died 1880 in Hamilton Poorhouse of old age

widower of Janet McKillop.

Funny thing is i know he was living with his son John in Stonehouse in 1871 and john was still living in Stonehouse in 1880.

I wonder why he ended up in the poorhouse, also no relative signed the death certificate (The manager of the poor house signed it)

Youll be very lucky if the application still exists. I know The Mitchell has some as I found one of my own made in the 1870's but it really didn't have a lot of information.

I'll have a look next time I'm there.

Hi Barkie,

I can't help with the lookup but thought it might help to tell you that many of us, me included, have come across rellies in poorhouse situations, even where there were relatives still around.

Life was a lot tougher back then and many families simply did not have the ability to financially support the old or ill.

There was no NHS so all medical attention and medication had to be paid for. No sickness or unemployment benefit and certainly no state pension either.

My own GGG Grandfather died in the poorhouse and his 70 year old wife was still working, cleaning pubs for their landlord in lieu of rent. They had nine grown-up children with kids of their own, all struggling to support themselves. The Parish did chase them up to contribute, but with minimal success. They simply didn't have the income.

I did think it was due to hard times or maybe he was ill with dementia or something and his family could not cope.

I have only just started doing the family tree around 6 months ago but i have got lots of info so far and made contact with a few people doing the same tree.

He got to 84 not a bad age in these days nevermind then.

I have to say this is without doubt the best site i have found so far for people helping.
