Hello All,
I'm hoping someone with some local knowledge may be able to help me here.
I have a gt gt uncle who died at Hillside, Saline, Fife in October 1913. I have been in touch with Fife Bereavement Services who have confirmed that he was not buried in Saline Cemetery. Where else is a possibility? And where else can I go to look for his grave?
Thanks,
Meg
Where was he buried?

Hi Meg
If you have a precise date of death as well as the place of death address and a cross ref on the parents, I'd be tempted to get in touch with Dundermline Crematorium as I believe they hold many of the burial records for that part of Fife. If they do not have a record of his burial, they may be able to suggest where to try next.

Best wishes

Hi Lesley,
I phoned them this afternoon and spoke to a very helpful lady who looked at all the records there. Unfortunately he isn't there.
So I'm a bit stuck
Is Torryburn a possiblity? I know Hillside was transferred to Saline from Torryburn in May 1891. I'm a bit hampered by my lack of knowledge of that area; of course I've looked on the map but that doesn't show the "workings" of an area.
All ideas/suggestions welcome!
Best wishes,
Meg

Main family lines are Harpers from Midlothian, Fife & Kinross-shire, and Dobies/Dobbies from Midlothian. Also Strathearn, Stobie, Layden and Downie.

Hi Meg,
A detached portion (1734 acres) of Saline parish was transferred to Torryburn on 15-May-1891 as a result of the Boundary Commission set up by the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1889. Amongst them, Hillside was described as a house with offices, policies, land and woodlands; and separately houses with land. The proprietor of these and a few other properties was Alexander Colvile.
Taken from "Boundaries of Counties and Parishes in Scotland (as settled by the Boundary Commissioners under the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1889" by Hay Shennan, Advocate.
Were your people the proprietors, or like most of our ancestors, the tenants?
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for that information - very interesting.
And very definitely the tenant rather than the proprietor - John Harper was a shoemaker.
Best wishes,
Meg
