Larbert Cemetery.....

Post by Pandabean » Wed Jun 07, 2006 3:33 pm

I spent a while yesterday looking around Larbert Cemetry looking for some relatives but had no luck. A fair few of the stones were hidden in the undergrowth and by trees.

Is there anywhere online that has a list of the people burried in the churcyard of Larbert cross?

Hi Pandabean,

I've just recently finished photographing and re-transcribing all the existing/legible/accesible stones in this Churchyard.

It was transcribed back in July 1969 by Mitchell & Mitchell and published as part of the pre-1855 MI's (East Stirlingshire). A lot more of the stones were still standing then and probably some of them more legible too but I have discovered a few errors in their transcriptions. Obviously they didn't have the luxury of digital cameras back then!

If you post details of the people you're trying to find, I'll check what I have.

Anne

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I think I gave up after half way through the graveyard, the weather was scorching yesterday. Plus I didnt fancy crawling into the vegetated parts as I hate wasps and bees.

Anyways the people I know that died in Larbert are:

Mary Wright Rutherford 17/10/1885
Agnes Penn Rutherford 27/7/1895
Janet Rutherford (Possibly Martin as her married name) 5/2/1862
Margaret Fish Penn 7/12/1883

The last names are their married names and the middle names are their maiden names. The dates are obviously the dates that they died on.

Thanks again,
Andy

Hi Andy

I have the East Stirlingshire MI book.

next one listed

Chr Rutherford 24/7/1854 20;Janet R. 5/2/1862 25;Mary Wright 17/10/1885 34 ( on top)132

Larbert East Churchyard? Where is that? Is that near Larbert Cross?

John Wright and Mary Jack don't mae sense at the mo. Neither does Daniel Rutherford (age 2?) The Daniel I know died in 1875 and was born in the late 1830's

However John Rutherford and Agnes Penn are both my direct ancestors and the dates for them match.

The second lot are also mine, except I have no record of Christina.

Thank You.

Hi Andy,

Your rellies are indeed buried in Larbert East Churchyard but unfortunately there are no stones. The Churchyard was cleared and 'landscaped'not that long ago and all the existing stones placed around the perimeter wall. (I've photographed and re-transcribed this Churchyard also).

I'll try to translate the MI's already give to you by Morag.

Inscription 1.

1854 (When the Lair was purchased or the date of a death - in this case son Daniel's)
JOHN WRIGHT died 29th November 1870 aged 74 years
His wife MARY JACK died 6th October 1894 aged 81 years
Their son DANIEL died 1854 (The date on top of the stone)
Their daughter MARY died 27th June 1864 aged 21 years
JOHN RUTHERFORD died 29th January 1915 aged 76 years
AGNES PENN (wife of the above John Rutherford) died 24th July 1895 aged 57 years
(On top) 134 (This will have been the lair number within the Churchyard)

Inscription 2.

CHRISTIAN RUTHERFORD died 24th July 1854 aged 20 years
JANET RUTHERFORD died 5th february 1862 aged 25 years
MARY WRIGHT died 17th October 1885 aged 34 years
(on top) 132 (Lair number within Churchyard)

These stones were in their original position when it was surveyed in October 1971 and were on the right hand side of the path looking at the Church from the front.

Directions to Larbert East: (From Larbert Cross, the Churchyard you went to already)

Drive straight into Larbert/Stenhousemuir towards the railway station. Keep drivng straight through passing Stenhousemuir Shopping Centre till you come to a set of traffic lights. Turn right at these, (you'll see the Church at this point), then I think it's 1st left into a cul-de-sac where you can park. This is at the back of the church, walk through the car park at the right and you enter the Churchyard at the far end. It's only 5 minutes by car from Larbert Cross.

Hi Andy,

There is a Rutherford in Larbert Old Parish (the one at Larbert Cross) although it's a middle name.

The inscription on the stone reads (albeit a bit faded):

Erected to the memory of Richard Fraser who died 2nd July 1888? aged 36 years
Also his infant son George Rutherford who died 8th June 1881 aged 7? months.

I did a wee bit of searching for Richard Fraser. There was only one on the 1881 Cencus in the Larbert area and the following are the details:

Cencus Place: Larbert
Institution: Stirling Asylum for the Insane (which became Bellsdyke Hospital)

Richard Fraser age 29 born in Shotts Lanarkshire
Head of family and Servant
Ocupation: Engine Fitter in Boilers & C (?)
Euphemia Fraser, wife, age 29 born in Newbattle, Edinburgh
James Fraser, son, age 2 born in Larbert, Stirlingshire.

I next tried to find a birth for Richard and Euphemia in the British Vital Records using both his death date from the inscription of the stone and his age on the 1881 Cencus. I could only find one born around 1852 (9th July 1851) but his place of birth was listed as Edinburgh.

I did find 'possibly' the correct Euphemia Rutherford, again using the 1881 Cencus info as a guidline. She was born in 1851 in Newbattle, Midlothian, 4th of 5 children born to George Rutherford and Grace Stirling.

I can't remember offhand which month the 1881 Cencus was taken - maybe wee George who is buried in Larbert had died by this time?

The only other Rutherford I found in Larbert was Mary Rutherford at North Road, Larbert, age 79, widow, blacksmith's wife, born Kincardine, Perthshire.

Thanks Andrew,

I wonder where our wee George was . . . . . ?

On having another squint at the gravestone, I'm wondering if it's possibly January rather than June . . . . .

How do I attach an image to a message (an idiot's guide please) ?
