War Widow went to Canada

Post by trish1 » Sun Apr 22, 2018 12:08 pm

I've a war widow who went to Canada in 1924 to stay with her sister in Toronto. Any information on where I should be looking to find out if she remarried, where she lived when she died would be appreciated.

Her married name was Martha Maud Hassett neé Henderson. I have all the family details from England, my curiosity would like to find out what happened to her after settling in Toronto.

thanks

Trish

{Just in passing - one of the questions on the immigration form:
Are any of your family mentally defective:
Can't imagine anyone answering Yes.}

Hi Trish,

I had a look on Ancestry for her, but it is acting up tonight so I only found one entry. It is for a Martha Hassett on the 1962 Canada Voters List and shows her living in the Trinity district of Toronto at Lambert Lodge, 350 Christie St. Don't know if this is your Martha or not and couldn't search further because the site crashed!

Thanks Carol. I looked on ancestry and couldn't find anything - so you did better than myself. I'm busy today but will check it out later. She was born c. 1890 so would be 72 in 1962 - possible.

Hi again,

If you do a search for Lambert Lodge, Toronto you should get a link to the Canadian historical plaques site. Lambert Lodge started out as a military hospital and was converted to a senior's home in 1948. The historical plaques site looks like a very nice site as a reference for future searches.

Have you had a look for her sister too, if they remained nearby it could help tracking the other down.

I can't find the sister on the rolls mentioned by Carol. She may also have married. I did find her immigration form - she emigrated a few months before Martha.

Fanny Henderson married William Thomas Andrews in 1926. Martha was a witness.

Many thanks Annette - the new family search continues to amaze me with its records - I seem to miss finding them sometimes. I probably didn't look as closely for Fanny as I was mainly researching the family of Martha's husband who died in WWI - but I should remember to always look further afield.

much appreciated

Hi
I am researching the Jameson family who went to Canada and have a Margaret Hassett who went there in 1924 aged 4 years old. Her destination was her aunt Miss F Henderson who was your Fanny Foden Henderson sister living at 803 Pape Av, Toronto.
She was living at 23 Prust Av Ontario in 1940 with a Mrs William Henderson widow, Mrs William Hassett widow and Miss Margaret Hassett.

I believe that Margaret Hassett married Charles Jameson.
